💊 What amoxicillin is

Amoxicillin is a penicillin-class antibiotic that treats bacterial infections in both dogs and cats. It does not work against viruses, fungi, or parasites.

It works by preventing bacteria from building proper cell walls, which kills susceptible bacteria.

🐶🐱 What it’s commonly used to treat

Vets prescribe amoxicillin for things like:

  • Skin and soft-tissue infections (wounds, abscesses)

  • Respiratory infections (upper/lower airway)

  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)

  • Dental infections and oral abscesses

  • Ear infections (less common alone; often combined with clavulanic acid)

Very often, vets use amoxicillin-clavulanate (brand examples: Clavamox®, Augmentin®) because it’s more effective against resistant bacteria.

🧪 Typical dosing (general ranges, not a prescription)

These are informational ranges only — your vet should always determine the exact dose.

Dogs

  • Typical range: 5–10 mg per lb (≈10–20 mg/kg)

  • Given every 12 hours in many cases

Cats

  • Typical range: 2.5–5 mg per lb (≈5–10 mg/kg)

  • Often given every 12 hours

Dose, frequency, and duration depend strongly on:

  • Type of infection

  • Severity

  • Kidney/liver function

  • Other medications

⚠️ Side effects to watch for

Most pets tolerate amoxicillin well. Possible side effects include:

Common:

  • Poor appetite

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhea

  • Mild drooling (especially in cats, due to bitter taste)

Rare but serious:

  • Allergic reactions (hives, facial swelling, trouble breathing)

  • Severe lethargy

  • Bloody diarrhea

If you see swelling of the face or difficulty breathing, that’s an emergency.

Important safety notes

Do not use amoxicillin if your pet has:

  • A known penicillin allergy

  • A history of severe reactions to beta-lactam antibiotics

Use with caution in pets with:

  • Kidney disease

  • Liver disease

  • Very young or very old age

Never give human leftover antibiotics without veterinary guidance — wrong dose or duration can cause resistance and treatment failure.

Can dogs or cats overdose on amoxicillin?

Yes. Overdoses most often cause:

  • Severe diarrhea

  • Vomiting

  • Possible neurologic signs at very high doses

If overdose is suspected, a vet needs to be contacted immediately.

Bottom line

Amoxicillin is a safe and effective antibiotic for many bacterial infections in dogs and cats when:
✅ properly prescribed
✅ correctly dosed
✅ given for the full course

It’s not a cure-all and isn’t useful for viral infections.
