💊 What meloxicam is

Meloxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used in veterinary medicine for pain, inflammation, and fever.
It works by inhibiting COX-2 enzymes, which are involved in inflammation and pain pathways.

It’s not a steroid.

🐶🐱 Common veterinary uses

In dogs

Used for:

  • Osteoarthritis and joint pain

  • Post-surgical pain

  • Soft-tissue injuries

  • Dental pain

  • Musculoskeletal inflammation

In cats

Used for:

  • Post-operative pain

  • Musculoskeletal pain

  • Some chronic pain cases under very strict vet supervision

Cats are much more sensitive to NSAIDs than dogs.

🧪 Typical dosing (educational ranges only)

These are typical veterinary reference ranges — not a prescription.

Dogs

  • Loading dose: about 0.09 mg per lb (≈0.2 mg/kg) once

  • Maintenance: about 0.045 mg per lb (≈0.1 mg/kg) once daily

Cats

  • Often a single injection for short-term pain

  • Oral dosing only with very careful vet control

How fast it works

  • Starts working within 1–2 hours

  • Peaks within 4–6 hours

  • Lasts about 24 hours

⚠️ Important side effects

Common

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhea

  • Decreased appetite

  • Lethargy

Serious (vet emergency)

  • Black/tarry stools (internal bleeding)

  • Bloody vomit

  • Pale gums

  • Increased thirst or urination

  • Jaundice (yellowing of eyes/skin)

  • Sudden weakness or collapse

🚨 High-risk situations

Meloxicam should be used very cautiously or avoided in pets with:

  • Kidney disease

  • Liver disease

  • History of stomach/intestinal ulcers

  • Bleeding disorders

  • Dehydration

  • Shock or low blood pressure

It must never be combined with:

  • Other NSAIDs (carprofen, ibuprofen, aspirin, etc.)

  • Steroids (prednisone, dexamethasone)

There should be a washout period (usually several days) when switching between NSAIDs or between an NSAID and a steroid.

Cats vs dogs (very important difference)

🟢 Dogs → meloxicam is widely used and generally safe when prescribed correctly.
🔴 Cats → much higher risk for kidney injury and GI bleeding; long-term oral use is controversial and tightly controlled.

Bottom line

Meloxicam is a very effective veterinary NSAID for pain and inflammation, especially in dogs. When used correctly, it can significantly improve comfort and mobility — but it requires careful dosing and monitoring to avoid serious side effects.
